<몽로리에 다목적 극장> 몽로리에는 전통적인 제지용 펄프와 목재 수요의 감소에도 불구하고 산림산업이 여전히 주를 이루고 있는 작은 마을이다. 프로젝트 목표를 효과적으로 달성하고 대지 환경에 민감하게 대응할 수도 있도록 설계된 극장은 두 개의 이웃 시설을 배려하면서 주변 자연과 조화를 이루고, 동시에 지역 공동체와 주민들을 위한 새롭고 역동적인 사회적 연결 고리이자 문화적 터전 역할을 한다.
설계 공모 요강은 신속한 공간 재편이 가능해 다양한 규모의 각양각색의 활동과 행사를 수용할 수 있는 다목적 홀의 필요성에 초점을 맞추고 있었고, 따라서 강당은 전통적인 공연 예술 행사는 물론 무도회, 연회, 기업 행사, 무역 박람회 등의 다양한 프로그램들을 수용할 수 있는 시설을 갖추어야 했다.
몽로리에와 그 주변 지역의 사회문화적 가치를 건축 속에 투영하고자 지역 주민 및 방문객 동선은 전면이 유리로 된 현관 홀과 가까운 열린 광장을 통해 극장 건물로 수렴되도록 계획됐다. 교회와 신축 건물 사이에 설치된 공용 공간은 일상적인 소통과 마을 시장 등을 위한 장소로서 행사 전후에 시민들이 교제를 나눌 수 있는 공간이 된다.
정방형 SPF 집성재 빔들로 구성된 노출형 목조 지붕 구조는 몽로리에 지역 발전을 이끌어 온 천연 자원인 목재의 중요성을 명확하게 표현한다. 이러한 건축 언어는 강렬하고 극적인 조명 연출의 도움으로 유리 그랜드홀 공간에서 절정에 이른다. 목조 구조는 건축적 화두들에 일관성을 부여하고자 적용된 대담한 건축적 장치로서 강철이나 콘크리트 구조를 지양하는 친환경 건축에 대한 열망을 담고 있다. 결과적으로 아름다운 목조 구조는 오늘날 퀘벡의 미적, 친환경적, 사회적 가치를 건축적으로 형상화한다.

Mont-Laurier is a small town where the forest industry still plays a central role despite a declining demand for traditional lumber and pulp for paper.
In order to respond effectively to the project brief and be site sensitive, the building was integrated into its environment with respect to its two neighboring institutions, yet become a new and vital social anchor and cultural hub for the community and its residents. The competition guidelines stressed the need for a multipurpose hall able to accommodate a range of activities and events of varying sizes that was capable of rapid reconfiguration.
Therefore, the auditorium had to satisfy the needs of traditional performing art events and designed with a series of other configurations for cabarets, banquets, corporate events, and trade shows. In order for the building to successfully embody the socio-cultural core of Mont-Laurier and its surrounding region, the area’s inhabitants and other visitors are invited to converge towards the building via a public square adjacent to the fully-glazed entrance hall. The public space inscribed between the cathedral and the new building provides a place for informal encounters, public markets and allows the citizens to interact before and after the events.
The exposed, wooden roof structure, a square grid composed of SPF glue-laminated beams, clearly communicates the importance of this natural resource for the successful development of the region. This feature of the building is highlighted in the transparent, grand hall and by an architectural lighting strategy that provides a strong and dramatic presence. The wood structure is a bold gesture that is intended to unify the architectural proposal and that expresses the desire to build with a smaller environmental footprint than a steel and concrete structure would entail. As a result, this significant building element embodies the aesthetic, sustainable and social values of contemporary Quebec.
