<라 데팡스 국립스포츠센터> 퐁텐블로 숲 끝자락에 자리잡은‘라 데팡스 국립 스포츠센터’는 지난 50년간 프랑스군 전용 종합 스포츠 시설로 사용되어왔다. 정리되지 않은 대지 구성과 분산된 낡은 기반 설비들을 개선하고 군용 스포츠 시설을 시민들에게 개방해 훌륭한 자연 환경 속에 모든 사람이 수준 높은 스포츠 활동을 누릴 수 있도록 하고자 국방부는 전체 시설을 대대적으로 개편하는 프로젝트를 계획하게 됐다. 본 시설 재편 프로젝트는 3단계로 진행됐다.
1) 대지 청소, 정비 및 구획을 통해 시설 내 동선 반경을 줄이고, 숲 방향 노출면 극대화를 목적으로 자연 공원들을 재구성함으로써 청정 환경을 회복시켜 숲 속 깊숙이 들어와 있는 듯한 느낌을 주도록 했다.
2) 새 도시 연결망을 활용한 대지 구성을 통해 정문에서 모든 시설이 집중되어 있는 중앙 스포츠 시설까지 구간이 유기적으로 연결되도록 했다. 강렬한 상징성이 돋보이는 2개의 새 시설들(다르메 광장과 스포츠 광장)은 대지 내 여러 시설들을 연계하고 동선을 구축해주는 보행자 전용 도로를 통해 이어졌다.
3) 숲으로 구성된 대지 주변 풍광과 화답하는 선구조가 특징인 경량구조 건물은 새로운 공간적 흐름을 열어준다. 목재 등의 소재 구성을 통해 다양한 표정을 짓는 건물은 점잖고 온화하지만 동시에 매우 현대적이다. 두 동의 신축 스포츠 홀은 스포츠 광장 경계를 따라 솟아오른다. 50m 풀과 무도관, 레스토랑을 갖춘 수영장동은 주거동과 일직선으로 서 있고, 선수동은 스포츠 광장 경계 위에 서 있다. 수영장동과 선수동은 서로 비슷한 모습으로 설계됐다.
넓게 펼쳐진 지붕은 채광창들이 별처럼 박혀 있는 두 경사면으로 구성되어 있고, 차양 역할을 하는 돌출형 처마는 긴 띠 형태로 굽어지며 2층 입면을 덮는다. 1층 입면을 전부 덮고 있는 전면 유리는 숲 속의 다양한 스포츠 활동을 조망할 수 있게 하고 건물을 지면과 분리시킨다.

For the last 50 years, at the edge of the forest of Fontainebleau, the ≪ National sports center of la defense ≫ has housed the full range of sports training of the French military. The uncoordinated layout of the site, the dispersion of infrastructures that have become obsolete and the determination to open this military sports complex to sporting members of civil society to guarantee to all, the possibility of practicing sports at a high level in an exceptional location led the Ministry of Defense to undertake an ambitious project to redevelop the entire site. The spatial reorganization is carried out in 3 phases.
1) Cleaning, calming and clarifying the campus in order to reduce the footprint of the built environment and reorganize the reserves of landscaped property to restore the ambiance of a clearing, an atmosphere of being in the heart of the forest, by restoring the maximum amount of surface area to the forest.
2) Structure the le site thanks to a new urban framework from the entrance all the way to the sports plateau serving all the facilities. Two new places charged with powerful symbolism - the Place d’Armes and the Esplanade des Sports - connected by a pedestrian mall linking the features of the site and organizing its circulations.
3) Qualify the new sequence by inserting light buildings, whose lines echo the forested character of the campus. Gentle and peaceful yet decidedly contemporary architecture, whose variations are expressed through the reference material, i.e., wood. Two new sports halls rise along the edges of the sports esplanade. The pool or swimming hall, with a 50m pool, a dojo and a restaurant, stands in alignment with the housing units while the athletics hall closes off the esplanade. The two halls are similar in conception.
A vast roof with two slopes with a constellation of lanterns overhanging the gables to form an awning and curve back in long swathes to cover the facades of the 1st floor while the facades of the ground floors are all clad in glass overlooking the various sports activities in the forest, while detaching the halls from the ground.
